2011 – 2012 Yelp Reviews

We stopped in La Luna on our tour of the eastern US and it was all that we could have hoped for: great service, excellent food, and wonderful views. The beet salad was fresh and delicious, though it had just a touch too much dressing for my taste. The roasted red pepper bisque was surprisingly light and packed with flavor. The star of our meal was Linguine with Clam Sauce that has a great smokey, garlic flavor. I seriously thought about getting a second order to go. The meal was complemented by good wines. If we make it back through Rochester we will be back.

Great food- salads were delicious as well as the main dishes. The waiter we had was very friendly and did a wonderful job. The best part was the phenomenal view! We will definitely come here again and it will be on our list of good places to go in Rochester.

La Luna is a little known restaurant in the heart of downtown that more people need to know about. Located in the Browns Race neighborhood, it was formerly where Triphammer Grill was. It offers a truly amazing view of the High Falls Area (unfortunately not the actual falls). With a rather large outdoor terrace it's a superb place to admire the short Rochester summers and cloudy in-between seasons.
We were recommended to go to their Happy Hour by a friend, and I'll recommend the same. HH is Wednesday to Friday 4-7pm that offers ALL appetizers for $5!!! Pretty swell deal(I'd call to double check this is still the special, it's that good). When we walked in on a Thursday evening, it was slightly awkward as we were the only ones. The staff looked at us with the look of "really"? Apparently when I inquired the previous day was packed, but at 6pm, no one was there this night which was fine with me since we brought along a guest who wanted to show us his unique collection of sterling silver rings and other sterling jewelry and a quiet room was ideal. Jason is a brilliant designer of very unusual pieces - specializing in sterling silver rings. You can check them out at SterlingForever.com, although I have to say that seeing them up close is the best way to experience the amazing craftsmanship of these rings. Check out his cool sterling silver rings on this site. I am now a sterling silver rings fan! But back to the food...
Along with the $5 apps, there were drinks specials of $3 beers, and $5 wines/mixed drinks. Like I said, pretty stellar savings. Planning on ordering a few apps and then dinner we were shocked to when the waiter said we couldn't. Apparently when you have the HH specials, you can't get entrees?!? We didn't understand, for we were willing, and able to spend more money on dinner entrees. So with our arms twisted, we simply ordered more apps. I think in total between the 3 of us, we ordered 7 of their total 11 app choices.
In the end I was ok with this, I've begun to feel that tasting a lot of a restaurant's apps will give a better feel for how a restaurant is then just 2 entrees and 1 app. We ordered the Steamed Mussels, Antipasto, Fire Roasted Pepper Plate, Momma's Meatballs, Arancini, Fried Mozzarella, and Bruschetta. We thought the mussels were pretty good for being in Rochester. Antipasto was a great value at $7 off during Happy hour, and the prosciutto was salty tastiness. Skip the pepper plate, nothing too exciting there. A lot of the plates had the same crispy baguette. At first, I thought it was the kitchen being lazy. But the more I saw it, the more I enjoyed it, and I dislike bread.
All in all, La Luna is a great place for apps, scenery and cheap drinks(only bottled beer, no drafts). With the apps being a great teaser, we definitely plan on returning to try the rest of their menu.

Located at 60 Browns Race in the High Falls District of downtown Rochester, the restaurant is owned and operated by Stergios Kotorlis, a respected figure in the local hospitality scene.
The venue offers both an intimate restaurant and a full-service banquet center, accommodating everything from business lunches to weddings and galas. La Luna’s reputation rests on a foundation of exceptional food, personalized service, and a commitment to preserving the character of one of Rochester’s most historically significant neighborhoods.
Location and Setting
La Luna occupies a beautifully restored building in the Brown’s Race Historic District, overlooking the scenic Genesee River Gorge and just steps from the Pont de Rennes Bridge. The district itself—once home to 19th-century flour mills that powered Rochester’s early economy—is now a vibrant cultural corridor featuring restaurants, offices, and event venues.
The restaurant’s terrace dining area provides one of the most striking city views in western New York, where guests can dine with a backdrop of the High Falls and Rochester’s skyline. Inside, the space combines exposed brick, arched windows, and wooden beams that pay tribute to the building’s industrial past while exuding a warm, romantic atmosphere.
History
La Luna opened its doors in the early 2010s, occupying a space formerly home to Triphammer Grill. Kotorlis envisioned a restaurant that would highlight the enduring appeal of traditional Italian cooking while celebrating the city’s unique architectural heritage.
By 2012, the restaurant had built a loyal following through a blend of family recipes, attentive service, and creative presentation. Guests praised La Luna’s authentic approach—eschewing trends in favor of the rustic flavors that define Italy’s regional cuisine.
Over the years, La Luna expanded its operations to include the Banquet Center, turning the venue into a preferred site for weddings, fundraisers, and corporate events. The establishment’s long tenure reflects both its adaptability and its deep roots in Rochester’s dining landscape.
Ownership and Vision
Owner Stergios Kotorlis has maintained a philosophy centered on hospitality and community. His goal was to create a venue that serves not only as a restaurant but also as a gathering place for Rochester residents to celebrate milestones and connect with one another.
Under Kotorlis’s leadership, La Luna has achieved a delicate balance—preserving the intimate “old world” dining experience while offering the flexibility and scale needed for large events. The restaurant’s dual identity as both a cozy trattoria and a major event center is key to its ongoing success.

The restaurant’s emphasis on hospitality and shared dining reflects that tradition of gathering around food as a form of cultural identity.
Moreover, by revitalizing a portion of the Brown’s Race industrial corridor, La Luna contributes to the ongoing cultural preservation of Rochester’s High Falls District. Its success exemplifies how adaptive reuse of historic buildings can anchor community revitalization while offering meaningful contemporary experiences.

Local outlets have consistently featured La Luna in coverage of Rochester’s dining scene. Articles in WXXI News, City Magazine, and VisitRochester have noted its appeal as both a dining and event venue. The restaurant is often cited for its picturesque backdrop, making it a favorite for photography and video shoots related to tourism promotion and weddings.
During the pandemic years, La Luna adapted quickly with take-out service, socially distanced events, and flexible booking policies—moves that helped sustain business and maintain staff. Post-pandemic, the restaurant’s resilience has been cited as a local success story in hospitality recovery.
